Crowned, with a sceptre and the Child in her arm: the Virgen de la Candelaria, Our Lady of Candelaria, shows Mary as the venerated image of the Canary Islands. This wooden statue is hand-carved and painted in Val Gardena after Karl Demetz.
The venerated image stands in the Basilica of Candelaria on Tenerife; Mary is regarded as patron saint of the Canary Islands. According to tradition, it was discovered by Guanches near Güímar around 1390–1405. Pope Clement VIII declared her patron of the Diocese of the Canaries on 26 March 1599. The present venerated image is by Fernando Estévez (1827–1830); the original was lost. She is celebrated on 2 February, the Día de Candelaria (Candlemas), and the pilgrimage takes place mainly on 14 and 15 August.
