Motif & meaning
Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the best-known figures of Mary in the world and recalls the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1858 in Lourdes, France. There, Mary is said to have appeared several times to the young Bernadette Soubirous – in a white robe, with a blue sash and roses at her feet. Since then this depiction has become a symbol of hope, healing and faith.
The figure shows Mary in an attitude of prayer – an image of quiet devotion and deep trust. Her posture and gaze invite reflection and create an atmosphere of calm and prayer.
In homes, chapels or places of devotion she reminds believers of the power of prayer and of the care of the Mother of God. As a gift for religious celebrations such as a christening, First Holy Communion, Confirmation or recovery from illness, too, she carries a special meaning that brings blessing.
Finish, origin & special features
This Our Lady of Lourdes statue is made with careful handwork in the Gardena Valley in South Tyrol – a region world-famous for its woodcarving. Here the figures are made step by step by experienced sculptors: from cutting the lime wood to size, through the rough and fine carving, to the hand-painted final finish.
The wood is chosen with particular care to ensure a fine grain and stability of form. After sanding and priming, each figure receives its individual surface, depending on the finish: natural (sanded and untreated), multicolour stained (3-tone) with subtle shading, or colour, worked with oil paints and fine gold accents.
A final protective lacquer shields the figure from environmental influences and gives the surface a soft sheen. Every figure is strictly inspected before delivery to ensure the highest standard of craftsmanship. Depending on the series, the statue may bear the Val Gardena quality label – a mark of authentic woodcarving from South Tyrol.
