Description & details

This seated Madonna in the Baroque style shows Mary as the throne of the Child. Animated drapery and a festive posture make her an impressive focal point in the room.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

A statue of the Virgin Mary is a gift with meaning – for a wedding, a christening or First Holy Communion, for Mother's Day or for your own Herrgottswinkel (the traditional devotional corner). Discover more hand-carvedMadonna and Marian statues from South Tyrol.

Motif & meaning

The seated Baroque Madonna is a classic depiction of the Mother of God that unites calm, devotion and motherly love. Her gaze is directed gently at the Child Jesus, whom she holds protectively in her arm. This posture symbolises the intimate bond between mother and son – and at the same time the divine protection that Mary extends to all the faithful.

Created in the Baroque style, the figure conveys a special expressiveness. The rich fall of the robe, the sweeping lines and the gentle movement of the posture create a sense of liveliness and grace. Mary appears here as a central symbol of comfort and intercession, as mediator between heaven and earth.

The figure suits not only as a religious devotional image but also as a meaningful gift for spiritual occasions – such as a christening, Communion, Confirmation or wedding. In church rooms, chapels or stylishly furnished living areas, too, it develops its special aura.

Finish, origin & special features

The seated Baroque Madonna is made entirely by hand in the tradition-rich Gardena Valley in South Tyrol – a region known for centuries for its fine woodcarving. In specialised workshops, experienced master craftsmen carefully select well-dried lime wood, which is especially suited to richly detailed carving thanks to its even structure.

From the first cut to the last surface finishing, each figure is created with the highest precision. The process comprises the rough carving, the artful fine carving and the sanding and reworking of the fine details – in particular the facial features, hands and folds of the robe. Depending on the finish, the figure is then stained or hand-painted.

In the coloured version the painting is done in several layers with high-quality oil paints. This produces a lively, warm colour effect that emphasises the expressiveness of the face and the depth of the drapery. The natural finish, by contrast, shows the pure beauty of the wood, while the stained variant underlines the traditional character.

Finally, each figure is sealed with a transparent protective lacquer to preserve the surface and ensure durability. Depending on the series, each Madonna may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms authenticity and regional origin. Thanks to the natural grain of the wood, every figure remains an unmistakable one-of-a-kind piece – a piece of genuine South Tyrolean craft culture.
