Motif & meaning
The Madonna Addolorata, also known as Our Lady of Sorrows, stands as a symbol of the deepest form of motherly love and compassion. She embodies Mary's grief at the suffering and death of her Son Jesus Christ – a central moment of the Christian faith. In this depiction her pain becomes a quiet strength that conveys comfort, faith and hope.
The finely carved figure shows Mary with bowed head, a gentle yet moved expression and a gesture that expresses sympathy and devotion. The posture reflects humility and quiet dignity – an invitation to reflect on suffering and redemption.
This depiction is especially suited to rooms for devotion, altars or as a personal memorial figure. It is often used on days of remembrance, at funerals or in Passiontide, and recalls that pain and faith are inseparably linked. The “Madonna Addolorata” thus becomes a symbol of spiritual depth and timeless beauty – an expression of quiet closeness and inner strength.
Finish, origin & special features
The Madonna Addolorata is made entirely by hand in the tradition-rich Gardena Valley in South Tyrol – an area known for centuries for its fine woodcarving. Every step is carried out with the highest precision: from the selection of the lime wood through the carving of the delicate facial features to the elaborate painting.
The wood is first carefully dried to avoid tension. The rough carving then emerges from the solid block, followed by the detail work of the fine carving. After sanding, the figure receives – depending on the finish – a natural, stained or hand-painted surface. The coloured variant is painted with fine oil paints and refined with golden accents that emphasise light and expression harmoniously.
Finally, each figure is inspected, sealed and carefully packed. Some series may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms the authenticity of manufacture in South Tyrol.
This combination of craft precision, artistic expression and regional tradition makes each Madonna Addolorata an authentic one-of-a-kind piece – created to pass on faith, dignity and beauty for many years to come.
