Our Lady of Fatima recalls the Marian apparitions of 1917 in Portugal. With folded hands and a rosary she invites us to prayer – one of the best-known figures of Mary in the world.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
Our Lady of Fatima recalls the Marian apparitions of 1917 in Portugal, in which Mary appeared to three shepherd children and called for prayer, penance and peace. This figure shows the Mother of God in her humble attitude – with folded hands and a delicate rosary symbolising her deep bond with prayer.
Her robe falls in soft, harmonious lines and gives the figure a calm, spiritual presence. In its graceful form, motherly care is joined with a deep inner devotion that moves viewers and believers alike.
Our Lady of Fatima is regarded as an image of trust, hope and peace. She is especially suited to places of prayer, private prayer rooms or as a gift for people who are seeking comfort, reassurance or spiritual companionship.
This depiction joins timeless beauty with religious meaning and is an expression of quiet veneration and deep faith.
Finish, origin & special features
The Our Lady of Fatima statue is made entirely by hand in the traditional way in the Gardena Valley in South Tyrol – a region that has been known for centuries for its wood sculpture. Experienced woodcarvers shape each figure from carefully selected lime wood, which has first been gently dried to ensure stability and fine detail.
After cutting to size come the rough and fine carving, in which the face, hands and folds of the robe are worked out precisely. Each figure is then sanded and – depending on the chosen finish – refined further:
– natural: finely sanded, emphasises the grain and character of the wood
– colour: lovingly hand-painted with traditional oil paints and delicate gold accents
Every variant receives a protective surface lacquer that preserves the structure and gives a subtle satin sheen. On the coloured finish, fine gilding is applied using the classic gesso technique.
The final inspection is carried out personally in the workshop in Santa Cristina. Each statue is carefully packed and – depending on the series – may bear the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms the authenticity of genuine Gardena woodcarving.
The result is a work of art that brings together traditional craftsmanship, religious depth and natural beauty – made to last for a very long time.
