Description & details

This Madonna with Child is modelled on the style of Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the most important carvers of the late Gothic. Characteristic features are the inward-turned expression and the finely articulated robe.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

A statue of the Virgin Mary is a gift with meaning – for a wedding, a christening or First Holy Communion, for Mother's Day or for your own Herrgottswinkel (the traditional devotional corner). Discover more hand-carvedMadonna and Marian statues from South Tyrol.

Motif & meaning

The Riemenschneider Madonna stands in the tradition of Gothic sculpture and recalls the works of the Franconian master Tilman Riemenschneider. Her quiet expression, the slightly inclined posture and the robe falling softly in folds embody a deep spirituality that mediates between severity and tenderness. Mary holds the Child Jesus in her arm – an image of care, protection and faith.

This depiction avoids excessive ornament and lives from the plain dignity of its expression. It is an image of lived faith that radiates peaceful calm through form and posture.

As a devotional figure, the Riemenschneider Madonna brings the essence of the religious art of past centuries into today's room. It suits as a companion to quiet prayers, as a symbol of comfort or as a gift for spiritual occasions such as a christening, Communion, a wedding or ordination. Its timeless character also makes it an aesthetic art object in a modern setting.

Finish, origin & special features

The Riemenschneider Madonna is made in the workshops of Demi Art S.r.l. in Santa Cristina in the South Tyrolean Gardena Valley – a region regarded for centuries as a centre of European woodcarving. Under the artistic direction of master sculptor Karl Demetz, each figure is made purely by hand: from cutting the lime wood through the rough and fine carving to sanding and the final surface treatment.

The preferred material is lime wood, as it has a fine, even structure and is ideal for detailed carving. For larger figures, Swiss stone pine or maple is sometimes used. Every Madonna is made by hand, piece by piece – a process that unites precision, patience and artistic instinct.

The figure is available in different finishes: natural (sanded), multicolour stained and in the antique genuine gold leaf variant. In the antique genuine gold leaf variant the finest gold leaf is applied; it gets its characteristic surface from the gesso priming and fine crackle.

Each piece is released after a strict final inspection and – depending on the series – may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms the authentic origin and verified craftsmanship. The Riemenschneider Madonna thus stands for the union of tradition, art and craft perfection – created to endure.
