The praying Madonna Immacolata is a wooden figure of Mary, hand-carved in Val Gardena. Mary stands with folded hands, her head slightly bowed, a veil falling over her hair and shoulders. A calm statue for the home altar, the Marian corner or the chapel.
Immacolata is Italian and means “the Immaculate One”: it refers to Mary, who was conceived without original sin. Pope Pius IX proclaimed this doctrine on 8 December 1854 with the bull Ineffabilis Deus. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on the same day, and its celebration is attested as early as the 9th century.
- Heights: 12 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 36 cm, 40 cm, 60 cm, 80 cm, 100 cm
- Finishes: natural (finely sanded, untreated wood), multicolour stained (three stain tones with wax) or hand-painted (with oil colours, with gold leaf and silver leaf details)
- Wood: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
8 December is an obvious occasion to give the statue as a gift or to set it up for yourself. It also suits a housewarming gift for a new home or someone who feels especially close to Mary. For a small shelf the lowest size is enough; in a church or chapel the tallest carries well.
