Motif & meaning
The Assumption of Mary is one of the most solemn Marian motifs in Christian art. It shows the moment when Mary, having completed her earthly life, is taken up into heaven by angels. This depiction symbolises purity, grace and divine fulfilment – an expression of hope in eternal life.
Mary's raised arms stand for devotion and trust, her gaze towards heaven for faith in divine redemption. The angels who carry her embody joy and light – images of heavenly peace. In this composition movement, grace and spirituality come together in a harmonious whole.
As a hand-carved wooden statue, the “Assumption of Mary” expresses the deep symbolism of this great feast in artistic form. It is especially suited to churches, chapels and private prayer rooms, where it serves as a sign of faith, comfort and confidence.
Finish, origin & special features
The Assumption of Mary statue is made entirely by hand in the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena) in South Tyrol – a region that has been known for centuries for its outstanding woodcarving. Every figure is created in careful workshop practice using selected lime wood, whose fine grain offers ideal conditions for precise carving.
The production process follows the traditional Gardena carving technique: after the wood has been selected and dried, the basic forms are cut to size and then worked out in fine carving by experienced sculptors. Sanding, priming and painting are done by hand in several layers.
The different finishes give each figure its individual character:
natural: shows the pure wood structure and the carver's cut
stained / 3-tone: subtle colour gradations with a warm sheen
colour: hand-painted in colour with oil paints and golden details
All figures are inspected individually, carefully finished and packed with protection. Every “Assumption of Mary” is one of a kind and an expression of the highest craftsmanship from South Tyrol. It may bear the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms its authenticity and regional origin.
This combination of artistic precision, traditional production and spiritual symbolism makes the “Assumption of Mary” a lasting work of art that unites faith and craft in complete harmony.
