Description & details

The Magna Mater Austriae is the venerated image of grace (Gnadenbild) of Mariazell, Austria's most important place of pilgrimage. The small figure shows Mary with Child and crown, as she has been venerated for centuries.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The Magna Mater Austriae is regarded as a symbol of hope, protection and motherly care. This depiction of the Mother of God is deeply rooted in the Austrian tradition of faith and has been venerated for centuries as patroness of the country. It embodies the bond between faith, homeland and history.

Mary stands frontally, the Child on her arm, both with crown and nimbus. This posture expresses dignity, strength and grace. The richly decorated robe with golden ornaments underlines her role as Queen of Heaven and protector of the faithful. The Child holds sceptre and orb – signs of divine power and blessing.

The figure recalls the Baroque art of the Alpine region, in which faith and craftsmanship form a unity. It stands for trust, comfort and protection in all circumstances of life – a Madonna who is rooted deeply not only religiously but culturally.

Whether in churches, chapels or private rooms for devotion, the Magna Mater Austriae lends any place solemn calm and spiritual depth. She is an image of faith, love of homeland and the power of motherly intercession.

Finish, origin & special features

The Magna Mater Austriae is hand-carved in a tradition-rich workshop in the Gardena Valley in South Tyrol. In this region sacred woodcarving has had its firm place for centuries – it unites craft precision, a deep culture of faith and artistic expressiveness.

The material is lime wood, preferred for its fine structure and warm colour. After selection and drying, the wood is cut before the rough carving and then the fine carving take place. This brings out the characteristic forms, the faces, the hands and the sculpted fall of drapery. The figure is then sanded, primed and hand-painted in several layers.

The coloured finish is distinguished by luminous colours, fine gold decoration and a matt surface. Gold leaf is traditionally used for the gold decoration, applied in wafer-thin layers. This process demands the highest precision and decades of experience.

Finally, each figure receives a protective finish and a final inspection. The result is a genuine work of art in South Tyrolean handwork that joins faith and tradition.

The figures may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for verified origin and genuine handwork. Every Magna Mater Austriae is thus a one-of-a-kind piece – made with devotion, care and deep respect for a centuries-old craft.
