Motif & meaning
Our Lady of Altötting is a symbol of deeply rooted tradition of faith and an expression of hope and intercession. As patroness of Bavaria she has stood for centuries for comfort, protection and trust in difficult situations in life. Her depiction as a dark Madonna with a golden robe is unique and is venerated especially in southern Germany and Austria.
Mary carries the Child on her arm, both crowned and in a solemn posture. The Child holds a sceptre and orb – symbols of divine power and sovereignty. The simple form of the robe and the conical cloak give the figure a calm, almost iconic radiance. This Madonna joins royal dignity with motherly care.
The figure recalls the deep spirituality of the pilgrimage to Altötting, where the faithful have sought comfort and healing for centuries. It stands for security, trust and the confidence that faith and love sustain us even in hard times.
Whether as a devotional figure, a gift or a sign of thanks, Our Lady of Altötting brings a piece of religious history and spiritual strength into any home or sacred setting.
Finish, origin & special features
The Madonna of Altötting is made with careful handwork in the Gardena Valley in South Tyrol – a region known for centuries for its excellent woodcarving. Here figures are created that unite faith, art and craft perfection.
The material is fine lime wood, which is ideal for detailed carving thanks to its dense structure and smooth surface. After the wood is selected come cutting, rough carving and fine carving, in which the robe, face and crown are worked out precisely. The surface is then sanded and prepared for painting.
The coloured finish is painted by hand with oil paints. Characteristic of the Madonna of Altötting is the dark robe, decorated with gold-coloured ornaments and heart motifs.
Each figure is inspected individually to ensure the highest quality. This combination of traditional technique and artistic design produces a true piece of South Tyrolean craftsmanship.
Depending on the series, the figures may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for verified origin and authentic handwork. Each Madonna of Altötting thus becomes a one-of-a-kind piece that holds faith and history together – made with devotion and respect for a centuries-old heritage.
