The Madonna Bavaria shows Mary with crown and Child as patroness of Bavaria – a motif that has been venerated in Bavarian churches and homes for centuries.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The Madonna Bavaria shows Mary as Queen of Heaven – exalted and kindly at once, with crown and sceptre as signs of her heavenly dignity. On her arm she carries the Child Jesus, who holds the orb in his hands – a symbol of divine dominion over the earth. Together, mother and son stand for protection, grace and faith, set in a depiction of festive grandeur.
This motif embodies the veneration of Mary as “Queen of Bavaria” and patroness of the land. The crescent moon at her feet points to her purity and the overcoming of the earthly, while the crown and orb emphasise her role as mediator between heaven and earth.
The “Madonna Bavaria” is more than a religious figure – it is an expression of deep popular piety and cultural belonging. It finds its place in churches, chapels or private rooms for devotion and stands for confidence, protection and the strength of faith in everyday life.
Finish, origin & special features
The Madonna Bavaria is made purely by hand in the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena) in South Tyrol – a region known for centuries for its sacred woodcarving. Each figure is made from fine lime wood that is carefully selected, dried and worked by experienced master carvers in traditional workshop practice.
The production process includes all the classic steps of Gardena woodcarving: after cutting, the figure is roughed out, worked out to the last detail in the fine carving and then sanded. Depending on the finish, priming and hand-painting with high-quality oil paints follow.
All colours are applied by hand, which gives every figure its unmistakable character. Finally it is sealed for protection and inspected individually to ensure the highest quality.
Every “Madonna Bavaria” is a one-of-a-kind piece of genuine South Tyrolean craftsmanship and – depending on the series – may bear the Val Gardena quality seal. It unites traditional woodcarving, the finest painting and spiritual symbolism in a work of art that radiates lasting dignity and faith.
