The Heart of Mary stands for the “Immaculate Heart of Mary” – an image of divine love, compassion and purity. In this depiction the Mother of God shows her open heart, surrounded by flames and a crown of thorns. It recalls her suffering and, at the same time, her unshakeable love for people.
The flames symbolise Mary's burning love, while the crown of thorns stands for pain and self-sacrifice. Rays of light coming from the heart point to divine grace and the comfort Mary offers to the faithful. Her gentle gaze and the calm gesture of her hands underline the character of mercy and devotion.
This figure is especially suited to prayer rooms, home altars or as a spiritual gift. It invites inner reflection and reminds us that love, forgiveness and compassion are central strengths of faith.
The Heart of Mary figure is made by hand in the traditional way in the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena) in South Tyrol – a region renowned worldwide for its finely worked woodcarving. Every figure is created in precise studio work from carefully selected lime wood, which, thanks to its fine, even structure, is ideal for delicate detail.
The production follows the classic Gardena sculpting tradition:
– Selection and drying of the wood
– Cutting to size and rough shaping by hand
– Fine carving with knives and gouges for the face, hands and robe
– Careful sanding and priming
– Hand-painting with high-quality oil paints or gold leaf finishing
The different finishes bring out different characters:
– natural: shows the pure wood structure in a warm tone
– stained / 3-tone: emphasises the grain and depth
– colour: hand-painted in finely matched tones with gold accents
– genuine gold leaf: fine gold leaf finishing
Each figure is sealed with a protective lacquer at the end and carefully inspected. Depending on the series, the Heart of Mary figure may bear the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms its authenticity and origin.
