Description & details

The Patrona Bavariae is the patron saint of Bavaria; her solemnity is celebrated on 1 May. The figure shows Mary with crown, sceptre and Child – a classic of Bavarian Marian devotion.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The Patrona Bavariae is the patron saint of Bavaria and a strong symbol of faith, homeland and divine protection. The depiction shows Mary with the Child Jesus, both adorned with crowns, as an image of the royal dignity of heaven. The Child blesses the faithful while Mary holds the sceptre – signs of her care and spiritual sovereignty.

The crescent moon beneath her feet points to the biblical image of Mary from the Book of Revelation: “A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” This symbolism links the Patrona Bavariae with universal Marian devotion and regional tradition of faith.

In Bavaria she has been regarded for centuries as protector of the land and its people. The figure stands for intercession, peace and the protection of the family. As a devotional figure or gift, she preserves a piece of lived tradition and conveys the strength of faith in any setting.

Finish, origin & special features

The Patrona Bavariae is made in traditional handwork in the Gardena Valley (South Tyrol) – a region known for centuries for its sacred woodcarving. Under the direction of experienced master sculptors, each figure is made from selected wood with the highest precision and artistic finishing.

The wood – usually finely grained lime wood – is carefully selected, dried over months and then cut. In several steps a richly detailed figure emerges: from the rough cutting through the fine carving to the final painting. The artist's hand shapes every detail – face, hands, cloak and crown.

The figure is hand-painted, with oil paints and fine gold accents.

Finally, each figure is given a protective lacquer and subjected to strict quality control. It may bear the Val Gardena quality seal – a sign of genuine South Tyrolean craftsmanship and confirmed origin. Through the union of tradition, artistic expression and masterly carving, every Patrona Bavariae becomes a lasting symbol of faith and of the Bavarian tradition of protection.
