Description & details

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patroness of the Carmelite Order, and her feast day is 16 July. She is shown with the Child and the scapular, a sign of trust in Mary's intercession.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

A statue of the Virgin Mary is a gift with meaning – for a wedding, a christening or First Holy Communion, for Mother's Day or for your own Herrgottswinkel (the traditional devotional corner). Discover more hand-carvedMadonna and Marian statues from South Tyrol.

Motif & meaning

The Virgin of Mount Carmel is one of the oldest and most important Marian motifs of the Carmelite Order. She shows Mary as heavenly intercessor and Mother of Mercy. In her right hand she holds the scapular – a sign of connection with Christ and an expression of protection, trust and faith.

The Child Jesus on her arm holds the orb in his hand, an image of the divine power and love that Mary mediates to humankind. Both wear crowns as a symbol of heavenly kingship. Her calm posture and mild gaze give the figure a special spiritual depth – an invitation to prayer and inner calm.

This depiction recalls the words of the tradition: “Whoever dies wearing the scapular will not be lost.” It stands for protection, grace and the certainty that faith gives support and security. Whether in a private devotional space, in church or as a gift for religious feasts, the Virgin of Mount Carmel is an image of trust, hope and heavenly help.

Finish, origin & special features

The Virgin of Mount Carmel is carved entirely by hand in the Gardena Valley (South Tyrol) – a region known for centuries for its sacred woodcarving. Figures are made there that combine ancient craft with artistic precision.

The wood used – usually finely grained lime wood – is carefully selected, air-dried over a long period and then cut. In several steps experienced woodcarvers shape a richly detailed figure from the raw block. From the first rough carving through the precise fine carving to the final surface finishing, a piece of genuine Gardena craftsmanship comes into being.

The figure is hand-painted, with oil paints and golden accents.

Finally, each figure is sealed with protective lacquer and subjected to strict quality control. On request it may bear the Val Gardena quality seal – a sign of verified origin and masterly workmanship. Through this careful handwork each Madonna becomes a true one-of-a-kind piece: a work of art of lasting value, created in the tradition of South Tyrolean woodcarving.
