This Madonna stands with an open book in her hand, her gaze lowered, her veil over her head. The wooden statue bears the name “Mother of Wisdom” and suits people who enjoy reading, learning or teaching – a place in the study is just as conceivable as one in the crucifix corner (Herrgottswinkel).

In the Litany of Loreto Mary is invoked as “Seat of Wisdom”; the name of the statue recalls this invocation. The idea is that Mary carried the Son of God and so, as it were, gave Wisdom a place. The book in her hand invites you to read Scripture.
