Lourdes Group – Apparition of Our Lady – Wooden Statue from South Tyrol

This Lourdes group shows the apparition of Our Lady as a wooden statue: Mary stands with folded hands and a long rosary on a rocky base, and in front of her a girl with a basket kneels in prayer. Roses bloom between the rocks. The group belongs on a home altar, in a Marian corner or in a chapel – for everyone who holds Lourdes dear.

In 1858, Mary appeared to the then 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in the Massabielle grotto near Lourdes, 18 times in all between 11 February and 16 July. The feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes is therefore celebrated on 11 February. Bernadette was beatified in 1925 and canonised in 1933.

• Heights: 12 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm
• Finishes: Natural; hand-painted (oil colour, gold leaf and silver leaf on the details, secured with lacquer)
• Wood: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine

As a memento of a pilgrimage, as a gift for someone who prays for the sick, or for the feast day in February – the group tells the scene without needing many words. You will find more figures of Mary from the workshop in the collection.

The Lourdes group too bears the marks of the knife: it was hand-carved in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) and is therefore unique in its grain.
