Description & details

The “Mother of the Earth” shows Mary with the Child Jesus, who holds the globe in his hand. She stands for security, care and the trust of being carried – a quiet image of Mary for everyday life.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Motif & meaning

The Madonna with Child “Mother of the Earth” embodies one of the most central symbols of the Christian faith: the close, loving relationship between Mary and the Child Jesus. In this depiction Mary carries the Child on a cloth that gently wraps her arm. The Child Jesus holds the globe – an image of divine creation and of Christ's responsibility for the world. This gesture joins tenderness with deep spiritual meaning: the divine turns to the earthly to bring salvation and peace.

The motif recalls the universal role of the Mother of God as protector of humankind. “Mother of the Earth” stands for security, devotion and hope. The figure calls on us to shape our own world with care and love – a thought that reaches beyond religious boundaries.

In private settings the Madonna is often placed as a blessing symbol in the living room or prayer corner. In churches and chapels she serves as the focus of quiet devotion. As a gift for a christening, Communion or wedding she also carries the thought of faith onward. Her peaceful radiance recalls the inner worth of trust and protection – values that connect people of all ages and endure beyond time.

Finish, origin & special features

Every Madonna with Child “Mother of the Earth” is made in the tradition-rich workshop of Demi Art S.r.l. in the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena) in South Tyrol. For centuries this valley has been the heart of European woodcarving – known for the highest precision, fine lines and the harmonious expression of religious figures. Under the artistic direction of master sculptor Karl Demetz, each figure is made by experienced craftsmen who have passed on their knowledge over the years.

The lime wood used is carefully selected and dried naturally over several years to ensure stability of form and clean cuts. The production process comprises several stages: rough carving, fine carving, sanding, priming (with gesso for gilding), hand-painted colouring and final sealing. Every detail – from the fine facial features to the gold-decorated hems – is worked out with the greatest devotion.

The figure is available in different finishes:
– Natural – pure wood look, sanded and untreated
– 3-tone stained – harmoniously graded colour shades
– Coloured – hand-painted with oil paints, fine shading and delicate colour transitions
– Genuine gold leaf – gilding with classic lustre

Depending on the series, the Madonna may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for verified origin and craftsmanship from South Tyrol. The combination of traditional manufacture, high-quality materials and religious symbolism makes each figure an authentic expression of European art history – created to endure.
