Motif & meaning

The “Mother of Peace” shows Mary with the Child Jesus in her arm – a motif that has been regarded for centuries as an image of care, security and divine love. Her posture is calm and protective, her gaze gently lowered. The Child rests trustingly at her side. In this depiction motherly tenderness and spiritual depth unite in powerful symbolism that reaches far beyond the religious.

The name “Mother of Peace” recalls the comfort that Mary gives in times of unrest. She stands for inner peace, harmony at home and trust in divine help. Many of the faithful place this Madonna in places of quiet – in the living room, in a prayer corner or in the entrance hall – to bring a moment of calm and reflection into everyday life.

The Child on her arm symbolises the connection between heaven and earth. It is not only a depiction of the divine origin but also a reminder of a mother's protection and love. The finely worked fall of her robe makes the figure look alive, while her gentle face conveys peace and humility.

The “Mother of Peace” is often given at special moments in life – such as a christening, Communion, Confirmation or as a spiritual gift for the birth of a child. She is equally suited as a keepsake of a pilgrimage or as a quiet sign of thanks. In sacred spaces such as chapels, altars or devotional niches she develops her full effect as a symbol of divine closeness.

The figure is more than a decoration – she is an expression of faith and a quiet companion through everyday life. Her name says it all: where she stands, peace arises, one that is not loud but deeply felt.

Finish, origin & special features

Every “Mother of Peace” is made in the tradition-rich workshop Demi Art in the heart of the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena) in South Tyrol. For centuries this region has been regarded as the centre of European woodcarving. All figures are made here with elaborate handwork – from the rough cutting to the fine modelling of the faces.

The lime wood used is especially dense and even, ideal for precise carving. For larger figures, maple or Swiss stone pine is also used. The wood is carefully dried to prevent cracking and then brought into shape. Only then does the detailed carving begin, which often takes several days.

Depending on the variant, the Madonna is left natural, stained, multicolour stained, hand-painted (coloured) or covered with genuine gold leaf. In the antique genuine gold leaf variant, several layers of gesso and gilding produce a fine crackle that gives the figure an especially noble, historic look. Every painting is done by hand, with oil paints and the finest brushes – no figure is like another.

The design comes from the artistic direction of master sculptor Karl Demetz, whose workshop Demi Art is valued worldwide for its fine sacred art. All figures are inspected before dispatch, then packed securely and supplied with a certificate of origin.

This Madonna is not only a work of art but a piece of South Tyrolean cultural history. The combination of centuries-old tradition, honest handwork and natural materials makes every sculpture unique. Thanks to the careful workmanship, the wood stays breathable and keeps its warm character.

Thanks to the different surfaces – from plain to gilded – the “Mother of Peace” fits harmoniously into any setting. Whether as a house blessing, altar figure or personal keepsake: she stands for constancy, peace and the beauty of genuine craftsmanship from the Dolomites.
