Description & details

This Madonna with Child is designed in the Renaissance style: calm lines, flowing robe and a clear, dignified posture. It joins the visual language of great Marian images with Gardena carving.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

A statue of the Virgin Mary is a gift with meaning – for a wedding, a christening or First Holy Communion, for Mother's Day or for your own Herrgottswinkel (the traditional devotional corner). Discover more hand-carvedMadonna and Marian statues from South Tyrol.

Motif & meaning

The “Renaissance Madonna” is a homage to classical Italian art of the 15th and 16th centuries. She embodies the ideal of beauty, harmony and motherly love – the values regarded in the Renaissance as an expression of divine perfection.

Mary stands in a calm posture, the Child held securely in her arm. Her gently inclined head and calm gaze give the scene a graceful serenity. The Child Jesus playfully holds her hand, which emphasises the human closeness and warmth of this depiction. This composition reflects the essence of Marian devotion: devotion, protection and trust in divine care.

Through its classical lines and harmonious proportions, the figure fits into traditional and modern settings alike. It stands as a symbol of faith, family and inner peace – as a devotional figure and equally as an artful accent in living spaces.

As a gift for a christening, Communion, a wedding or religious feasts, the Renaissance Madonna carries a timeless message: she recalls the value of love, faith and constancy – and the beauty that grows from genuine craftsmanship.

Finish, origin & special features

The “Renaissance Madonna” is made in a tradition-rich woodcarving workshop in the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena) in South Tyrol – a region known for centuries for its sacred art and its fine feeling for form and expression. Under the direction of experienced master sculptors, each figure is made by hand, with the highest precision and respect for wood as a natural material.

The material is lime wood, which is especially suited to detailed work thanks to its fine structure. After cutting comes the rough carving; then face, hands and the run of the folds are carefully worked out in the fine carving. Sanding gives the surface its soft feel and the warm sheen that lends the figures their lively radiance.

The different finishes each bring out their own character:

Natural: finely sanded, with visible wood grain.

Stained / multicolour stained: harmonious tones with depth and texture.

Coloured: hand-painted with oil paints, soft colour gradients and golden accents.

Genuine gold leaf: gilded on a gesso ground.

Finally, each figure is sealed with a protective lacquer and subjected to a strict final inspection. This keeps the high quality of South Tyrolean woodcarving assured.

The “Renaissance Madonna” may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for verified origin and genuine handwork. The result is a work of art that unites the aesthetics of the Renaissance with the soul of Gardena craftsmanship – a lasting symbol of faith, art and craft perfection.
