St Florian

When there is a fire, people call the fire brigade. For centuries they have also called on St Florian. He is the patron saint of firefighters and one of the best-known saints in the Alpine region.

Who was Florian?

According to tradition, Florian was a high-ranking Roman administrative official in the province of Noricum, in present-day Austria. When Christians were persecuted under Emperor Diocletian, he openly professed his faith. He is said to have been drowned in the River Enns near Lorch (Lauriacum) on 4 May 304, with a stone around his neck.

St Florian’s Abbey near Linz was built over his grave and is an important centre of devotion to Florian.

Legend and tradition

The legend reports that Florian put out a burning house with a single bucket of water. That is why he is depicted with a water bucket. How the legend arose is unclear; what is certain is that since the Middle Ages he has been called upon in the danger of fire.

Feast day

The feast day of St Florian is 4 May. In the German-speaking world it is an optional memorial, but it is celebrated especially in Bavaria and Austria. Regional and denominational calendars may differ.

Patronage

  • Fire brigades and firefighters
  • Upper Austria
  • Chimney sweeps and potters
  • Invoked in danger from fire and water

“Patron saint” means that people ask this saint to intercede for them with God. No guarantee or promise of miracles is attached to it.

Attributes and depiction

Florian usually appears as a Roman soldier in armour with a banner, often pouring water from a bucket onto a burning house. Sometimes he carries a millstone, a reference to his martyrdom.

A short prayer

St Florian, protector in times of need: pray for all firefighters who risk their lives for others. Keep our homes and our families safe, and give us the courage to help wherever help is needed. Amen.

A simple prayer in our own words, to pray along.

Customs

On 4 May, St Florian’s Day, many fire brigades hold services, often with a St Florian’s Mass, a blessing of the banners and a blessing of the vehicles. In Bavaria and Austria, Florian celebrations are a fixed part of club life.

The saying “St Florian, spare my house, set fire to others’” is, by contrast, a humorous proverb about shifting problems on to other people. The saint would hardly have approved.

Today

The name Florian comes from the Latin “florens”, flourishing. Anyone called Florian celebrates their name day on 4 May. Even without a link to the fire brigade, the saint is a symbol of civil courage: he stood by his faith although it was dangerous. A St Florian companion makes a suitable gift for firefighters, for a retirement from service or as a token of gratitude to volunteer emergency crews. Many parishes also bless vehicles and fire stations on St Florian’s Day.
