Motif & meaning
The Baroque St Florian embodies courage, selflessness and the power of faith. His depiction in the Baroque style shows him as a Roman officer who resolutely puts out a burning house with a water bucket – an emblem of protection, devotion and readiness to help.
St Florian lived in the 3rd century and is known above all as the patron saint of firefighters, chimney sweeps and home owners. His legend tells of a man who acted out of compassion and faith and suffered martyrdom for it. The burning flames at the base symbolise danger and purification, while the saint's water represents divine assistance.
The Baroque design underlines the movement and drama of his deed – an expression of strength and trust in divine protection. As a statue, St Florian reminds us that courage, faith and humanity go hand in hand. Whether as a gift, an honour or a devotional statue: this depiction is a sign of thanks and solidarity with all who serve in protection and help.
Finish, origin & special features
The Baroque statue of St Florian is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – a place that has been known for centuries for its masterly woodcarving. Every statue is made in traditional workshop practice, under the direction of experienced master sculptors, who shape every detail with craft precision.
The wood used – usually finely grained lime wood – is carefully selected, air-dried for months and then cut to size. The production process comprises several working steps: rough cut, fine cut, sanding, priming (gesso) and the final painting or gilding. The result is a work that unites craft quality and artistic expression.
The finishes give the statue its individual presence:
– natural – finely sanded, untreated, with visible grain
– multicolour stained (3 tones) – harmonious play of colour with depth
– colour – hand-painted with oil colours and gold accents
– genuine gold leaf – elaborately covered in gold leaf
– antique genuine gold leaf – traditional gesso ground, gold leaf with a refined craquelé
After completion, each statue is sealed with a protective varnish and put through a precise quality inspection. It may carry the Val Gardena quality seal – a hallmark of verified origin, quality of material and genuine handwork from South Tyrol.
Through the union of Baroque formal language, the finest carving technique and religious symbolism, every statue of the Baroque St Florian becomes a lasting work of art – made for people who revere courage, protection and faith in a special way.
