St Florian was a Roman official who was drowned in the River Enns around 304 because of his faith. With the water pail with which he puts out a burning house, he is the patron saint of firefighters; his feast day is 4 May.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Motif & meaning
St Florian is one of the best-known patron saints of Europe and is regarded above all as the patron of firefighters, chimney sweeps and home ownership. His depiction – as a Roman officer with a water bucket and flag – recalls his historical role as a helper in need and defender of the faith.
According to legend, Florian lived in the 3rd century as a Roman officer in Noricum (present-day Upper Austria). When he tried to save persecuted Christians from death, he was himself seized and executed. Since then he has been venerated as a symbol of courage, civil courage and selfless commitment.
The flames at the base of the statue stand for the danger of fire – and at the same time for divine purification. The water in the bucket symbolises protection, life and grace. This combination makes the statue a strong sign of hope and support.
Whether in the fire station, in church or as a statue for the home – St Florian embodies faith in protection and help in difficult times. He reminds us that courage and love of neighbour are the true virtues of human action.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Florian is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – a place known for its tradition-rich woodcarving. Under the direction of experienced master sculptors, every statue is made with the highest precision and love of detail.
The wood used – usually finely grained lime wood – is carefully selected and air-dried for months before it is cut to size. Experienced carvers then shape the motif step by step: from the rough layout through the fine cut to the completed working of face, cloak and attributes such as bucket, flag and helmet.
The finishes give the statue its individual character:
– natural – finely sanded, untreated, with visible grain
– multicolour stained (3 tones) – warm, high-contrast shading
– colour – hand-painted with oil colours and golden accents
– genuine gold leaf – refined with fine gold leaf
Each statue is finally given a protective varnish and put through a careful quality inspection. On request it can carry the Val Gardena quality seal – a sign of verified origin and genuine handwork.
This traditional manufacture produces a statue that not only impresses artistically but also moves spiritually. St Florian from South Tyrol is a symbol of lasting values – made for people of every generation who value courage, loyalty and protection.
