Motif & meaning
St Nicholas is one of the best-known saints of the Christian tradition – venerated as bishop, benefactor and patron of numerous professions and parishes. The depiction with the three apples refers to one of the best-known legends of Nicholas: his generous help for people in need, often hidden and without expecting thanks. This small gift became a powerful symbol of Christian charity and humanity.
The figure shows Nicholas in a dynamic, almost striding posture, with raised crozier and a bundle of apples in his hand. This movement gives him a special liveliness and underlines his role as an active helper. At the same time the mitre, the splendid bishop's cloak and the fine folds of the robe point to his ecclesiastical dignity. The combination of the narrative and the liturgical creates a figure that has strong meaning both in the religious year and in a personal prayer space.
In Advent, and especially on 6 December, St Nicholas is venerated and celebrated in many places. The figure recalls his message of kindness and the quiet work that can give people hope. As a gift, too, it has great symbolic power – for families, parishes, children's groups or people who want to anchor the spirit of St Nicholas' Day in their home or institution.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of “St Nicholas with Three Apples” is created in traditional hand carving in Val Gardena, where woodcarving has been practised and handed down for generations. The basis is finely structured lime wood, which, thanks to its calm grain and even fibre, is ideal for detailed folds of the robe, facial features and filigree attributes. For larger figures in the series, multi-layer glued wooden blocks may be used to reduce tension and ensure dimensional stability over many years.
After the wood has been selected comes cutting and rough carving, in which the basic form of cloak, crozier, mitre and the characteristic trio of apples is laid out. The fine carving that follows brings out the typical details: the finely modelled hands, the dynamic movement of the robe, the sculptural curve of the bishop's crozier and the expressive facial features. Every figure is carefully sanded, resulting in a harmonious surface that shows off the natural structure of the wood.
In the hand-painted colour version, the figure is painted in several layers with oil paints. The strong reds, golds and blues of the bishop's vestments and the warm gradations of the flesh tones are built up layer by layer. Gold accents on hems and crozier give the depiction a festive character. The natural version, by contrast, shows the pure wood grain and emphasises the fine lines of the carving. Both versions receive a protective sealant that makes the surface durable.
Each piece is inspected individually before dispatch. Depending on the series, the figure may bear the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms the craft origin in Val Gardena. As only natural wood is used and every figure is carved entirely by hand, each piece has individual features in grain, colour absorption and fine nuances of detail – characteristic qualities of genuine, traditional South Tyrolean woodwork.
