St Adelphus of Metz – hand-carved wooden statue from South Tyrol

This wooden statue shows St Adelphus of Metz as a bishop with mitre, crozier and book. It is hand-carved in Val Gardena and appeals to people connected with Alsace or Lorraine, or those looking for a name-day patron with this rare name.

Adelphus was Bishop of Metz, possibly the successor of Rufus, and may have taken part in the Council of Nîmes in 394/396. His remains came between 823 and 840 to the monastery of Neuwiller in Alsace, which became a place of pilgrimage. His feast day is 29 August, and in Metz 30 August. The statue shows him as a bishop; no particular attributes have been handed down.

• Wood type: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
• Dimensions: 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80 cm
• Surfaces: Hand-painted, multicolour stained (three stain tones with wax, with gold or silver accents depending on the motif), natural, i.e. untreated wood with a finely sanded surface

A holiday in Alsace, a patronal feast in Neuwiller or a name day at the end of August are fitting occasions. The statue also makes a good souvenir for people who collect places of pilgrimage.
