Motif & meaning
St Nicholas is one of the best-known and best-loved saints of the Christian tradition. As Bishop of Myra he was venerated for his generosity, helpfulness and care for children and people in need. The depiction with book and apple expresses these qualities symbolically: the book points to proclamation and preserved teaching, while the apple is a sign of giving and sympathy. It recalls the many traditions in which Nicholas secretly gave gifts and thereby brought hope.
In his bishop's vestments the figure embodies the dignity of the office, but also closeness to people. The crozier stands for spiritual leadership, the mitre for responsibility and protection. The hand position and friendly expression give the depiction an inviting, almost familiar effect. This makes the figure suitable both for church spaces and for private prayer areas, where it acts as a sign of comfort, kindness and care.
Especially in Advent and at Christmas the figure takes on an additional layer of meaning, as St Nicholas is a fixed part of seasonal custom. It is also a valuable gift for people who bear the name Nicholas, for family members or for people connected to a Christian tradition. The figure combines spiritual depth with cultural familiarity and so creates a lasting presence in everyday religious life.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Nicholas is created in a craft process that has been kept alive in Val Gardena for centuries. Selected, air-dried lime wood forms the basis for the fine details of this depiction. After cutting, the blank is carved entirely by hand: first the basic forms are laid out, followed by the fine carving and the detailed working of face, robes, book, apple and bishop's crozier. Every line in the drapery, every contour of the mitre and every ornament is worked out individually with carving knives.
In the next step the figure is sanded and, depending on the finish, treated further. The natural version shows the pure structure of the wood, while stained finishes subtly emphasise the grain or create additional depth through multicolour staining. The hand-painted colour version is made using traditional painting technique, in which each layer of colour is carefully applied by hand. Gold accents set highlights on the mitre, cloak or crozier and give the figure particular value. Depending on the series, a gesso ground may also be used, providing a particularly smooth base for painting.
All stages of production – carving, sanding, finishing and final inspection – take place entirely in Val Gardena/South Tyrol. This keeps the connection to the regional woodcarving tradition, and every figure is made in a workshop known for its precise workmanship and reliable quality checks. Depending on the series, a certificate of origin may be enclosed or the figure may bear the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms the regional craft origin.
Through this combination of precise hand carving, high-quality materials and traditional South Tyrolean workmanship, a work of art is created that can take on special meaning both in a sacred context and in the private home.
