A sword pierces the book in the bishop’s hand: this wooden statue shows St Winfried Boniface, carved in Val Gardena. It is intended for Catholics in Fulda and Thuringia, for people with the name Winfried or Boniface and for friends of German Church history.
Winfried is Boniface’s baptismal name. He was an Anglo-Saxon missionary, organised the Frankish Church and was killed by robbers in Frisia in 754/755. According to tradition he held a book protectively over his head, and a sword blow pierced it. His feast day is generally observed on 5 June. He is patron saint of, among others, England, Thuringia, the dioceses of Fulda and Erfurt, and of brewers and tailors.

Boniface Day in early June is a good occasion for a Winfried or Boniface; likewise a Confirmation or a priestly jubilee in a parish with him as its patron. Anyone who has stopped off in Fulda takes home a souvenir with this statue.
