Thomas Becket lived from 1118 to 1170, was Lord Chancellor to King Henry II and became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162. Because he defended the rights of the Church, he was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral on 29 December 1170; he was canonised in 1173. His feast day is 29 December. In art, his martyrdom at the altar is recalled.
