Motif & meaning
St Jude Thaddeus is one of the twelve apostles and holds a special place in Christian tradition. As a close disciple of Jesus, he stands for faithfulness, perseverance and the steadfast passing on of the faith. In traditional iconography he is often shown with a book, which points to his task as a proclaimer of Christ's message. The further attribute recalls his martyrdom and makes him a symbol of readiness to sacrifice and strength of faith.
In religious practice St Jude Thaddeus is venerated above all as an intercessor in difficult situations that seem to have no way out. His figure is therefore closely linked with the themes of hope, trust and inner strength. This meaning gives the depiction a deep emotional and spiritual dimension that goes far beyond the merely pictorial.
The hand-carved figure is suited to personal devotion at home as well as to use in churches, chapels or quiet prayer rooms. It appeals to people who consciously want to create a place of recollection, and its calm presence supports a meditative atmosphere. As a gift for religious life events or as a sign of thanks, too, St Jude Thaddeus carries a lasting, personal meaning.
Being made in wood gives the motif a warm, natural presence. Together with the different surface finishes, the figure can be integrated harmoniously into various interior concepts without losing its dignified and tradition-conscious effect.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Jude Thaddeus is made in the traditional woodcarving craft of Val Gardena in South Tyrol. In this region the craft of wood sculpture has been practised and handed down for generations. Every figure is made entirely by hand, from the first cutting of the wood to the final surface treatment. Master sculptor Karl Demetz oversees the artistic direction and stands for a clear formal language and high craft precision.
The material is predominantly lime wood, as it is distinguished by an even structure and fine grain and allows particularly detailed carving. For larger sizes, glued wooden blocks may be used to reduce tension in the wood and increase dimensional stability. After the rough and fine carving, the surface is carefully sanded and prepared for the chosen finish.
Depending on the finish chosen, the figure has a different look. Natural versions bring out the grain of the wood clearly. Stained versions look calmer and more tonal, while multicolour stained versions create additional depth. Hand-painted colour figures gain their liveliness from finely matched oil paints and precisely placed details. For the genuine gold leaf and antique genuine gold leaf versions, a gesso ground is applied first, onto which gold leaf is then laid. The antique version is distinguished by a deliberately created craquelure that gives the surface a particularly traditional effect.
Every figure goes through a careful final inspection in which proportions, surface quality and details are checked. Depending on the series and finish, the figure may bear a Val Gardena quality label confirming origin and craft quality. As natural materials are used, every sculpture is one of a kind, differing slightly from other pieces in grain, colour tone and detail.
