Description & details

St Joseph, the carpenter from Nazareth and foster father of Jesus, is the patron saint of families, craftsmen and workers. His feast day is 19 March – St Joseph's Day; on 1 May St Joseph the Worker is celebrated.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The depiction of “St Joseph” is one of the classic motifs of Christian art and conveys a quiet yet powerful message. As patron saint of families, workers and craftsmen, Joseph stands for a sense of responsibility, faithfulness and a life carried by energy and faith. The figure shows him in a calm, slightly forward-striding posture – a symbol of steadfastness and of the readiness to stand up for others.

The toolbox and the set square refer directly to his trade as a carpenter. These symbols link the spiritual role model with everyday life and make Joseph a figure of identification for people shaping their own lives between work, family and inner conviction. The gently lowered eyes give the depiction a meditative quality that unfolds especially in prayer areas and sacred spaces, but also creates a calming presence in private living spaces.

The figure is suitable as a gift for religious feasts such as christening, Communion or Confirmation, and as a token of recognition for fathers or people in skilled trades. It stands for the quiet but sustaining strength of faith, which finds its expression in a life marked by care and reliability.

Finish, origin & special features

The figure of “St Joseph” is created in a time-honoured craft process that has been kept alive in Val Gardena for centuries. The selected wood – mostly lime wood for fine detail, for larger sizes sometimes also Swiss stone pine or maple – is first carefully dried to minimise tension in the material. Cutting follows, then the rough carving in which the basic forms are worked out. In the fine carving the characteristic features emerge: the calm posture, the precisely folded mantle, the finely modelled facial features, and the toolbox and the set square.

Different surface treatments are applied depending on the finish. Natural figures show the pure structure of the wood with its warm grain. The multicolour stained version combines three harmonious tones and gives the motif a subtle liveliness. In the coloured finish the figure is carefully painted by hand with oil paints, so that shading and highlights are brought out deliberately. The genuine gold leaf finish is created by traditional gilding with gold leaf on a gesso ground.

The figure is made one hundred per cent in Val Gardena/South Tyrol, and every step of work is subject to strict quality control. Every figure may – depending on the series – bear the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms handwork and regional origin. Because wood is a natural material, every figure differs slightly in grain and nuance and so has an authentic one-of-a-kind character.

Through this combination of traditional carving, precise detail work and a variety of surface options, the figure of “St Joseph” is a high-quality work of art, equally suited to collectors, believers and lovers of religious woodwork.
