Don Bosco stands here as a priest in a cassock with a raised hand, a boy leaning against him. The wooden statue suits youth centres, schools and parishes, and also anyone who does youth work or is called John.
John Bosco was born near Asti on 16 August 1815 and died in Turin on 31 January 1888. The priest devoted himself to the pastoral care of young people and in 1859 founded the Salesians, the Society of St Francis de Sales. He was canonised in 1934. His feast day is 31 January; he is regarded as patron saint of young people, youth chaplains and Catholic publishers. Don Bosco is the common nickname.
