Ildephonsus of Toledo is made here as a wooden bishop statue: mitre, staff and book belong to it. Anyone called Ildephonsus or with a connection to Spain will find in it a piece that is seldom seen.
Ildephonsus was born around 605 and died on 23 January 667. He was an abbot and from 657 Archbishop of Toledo, a disciple of Isidore of Seville. With his treatise on the perpetual virginity of Mary he promoted devotion to Mary in Spain. According to legend, on the Feast of the Ascension in 665 Mary appeared to him on the bishop’s throne and handed him a precious vestment. He is regarded as patron of Toledo and Zamora; his name day is 23 January.
