St Ambrose with book and beehive is a wooden statue from Val Gardena: a bishop in a mitre, his crozier raised, in his other hand the book with the beehive. A lovely motif for beekeepers, for anyone called Ambrose, or for all who feel close to the Doctor of the Church.
Ambrose was Bishop of Milan and a Doctor of the Church. He became bishop on 7 December, a week after his baptism. The beehive stands for diligence and learning. According to legend, bees settled on him as a child and dripped honey into his mouth, which is said to have given him the honey-sweet language of his writings and hymns. He is patron, among others, of Milan, Bologna, beekeepers and bees.
