The bishop of this wooden statue holds a small model of a church in his arm, plus a book, the mitre on his head: this is St Wolfgang of Regensburg, carved in Val Gardena. It is intended for name bearers, for parishes with Wolfgang as patron saint and for pilgrims to the Wolfgangsee.
Wolfgang lived from about 924 to 994, was a Benedictine in Einsiedeln and from 972 until his death Bishop of Regensburg. He died in Pupping near Eferding and was canonised in 1052. According to legend he threw a hatchet from the Falkenstein and built a church where it landed: St Wolfgang. His feast day is 31 October. He is patron saint of Bavaria, Regensburg, shepherds and carpenters.
- Material: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
