St Adalbert of Magdeburg can be seen here as a wooden statue: a bishop with mitre, crozier and book, hand-carved in Val Gardena. The statue is for those who bear the name and for everyone rooted in Magdeburg and eastern Germany.
Adalbert, c. 910 to 981, was a monk, a missionary among the Sorbs and the first Archbishop of Magdeburg; the archdiocese was founded in 968. He died on 20 June 981 on a visitation journey, and his tomb lies in Magdeburg Cathedral. 20 June is his feast day. No attributes of his own are ascribed to him; the statue shows him as a bishop.
- Material: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
- Sizes: 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80 cm
- Surfaces: Hand-painted (painted with oil paints, details in gold leaf and silver leaf, fixed with lacquer), multicolour stained (three stain tones with wax, with gold or silver accents depending on the motif), natural (finely sanded, untreated wood)
A name day in June, an anniversary of the cathedral parish or a move away from Magdeburg are good occasions. The statue is also a good choice for the ordination or first Mass of a priest from a parish with Magdeburg roots.
