Adalgar stands before you in this wooden statue as a bishop with mitre, crozier and book, hand-carved in Val Gardena. For those who bear the name it is a rare find, and for friends of mission history in northern Europe a conversation piece.
Adalgar became a monk at Corvey Abbey before 856, worked with Archbishop Rimbert from 865 and succeeded him as Bishop of Bremen in 888. In long conflicts with Cologne he secured the independence of his church province, and he died in Bremen in 909. His feast day is usually given as 15 May; his date of death is not known for certain. No particular identifying attributes have been handed down.
- Wood: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
- Available heights: 80 cm, 60 cm, 40 cm, 30 cm and 20 cm
- Finishes: Natural (finely sanded, untreated wood), multicolour stained – three stain tones and wax, plus gold or silver accents depending on the motif, hand-painted
For a name day around 15 May, a wedding anniversary with Bremen roots or as a gift for a church historian, Adalgar is an original choice. He does not often show off the name, and that is exactly why he is a personal piece.
