The Madonna with Child and Apple is carved entirely by hand in the workshops of Demi Art S.r.l. in the South Tyrolean Gardena Valley. This valley, known for its centuries-old woodcarving tradition, is home to one of the most renowned schools of sculpture in Europe. Under the artistic direction of master sculptor Karl Demetz, figures are created here that combine craft precision with artistic expressiveness.
Each Madonna is made from carefully selected lime wood, which is ideal for detailed carving thanks to its fine structure and stability of form. After cutting follows the multi-stage handwork process: rough carving, fine carving, sanding, priming (gesso) and – depending on the finish – painting with high-quality oil paints or gilding with gold leaf.
The figure is available in several finishes:
natural: finely sanded, untreated – shows the pure grain of the wood
stained / multicolour stained: emphasises the natural structure with warm colouring
coloured: hand-painted with oil paints and discreet gold accents
genuine gold leaf: elaborately refined with gold leaf
Every finish receives a protective coat of lacquer to seal the surface. On request the figure may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for verified origin and authentic handwork.
The Madonna with Child and Apple thus unites religious symbolism, masterly craftsmanship and South Tyrolean tradition – created to endure and to make lasting values visible.
