Byzantine Cross Pendant Olive Wood Bethlehem with Velvet Pouch

Widened ends to the arms and a cut-out inner shape give this olive wood cross pendant its Byzantine character. At approx. 3.5 × 2.5 cm it is larger than the plain mini crosses and yet light (approx. 13 g).

Cross forms with broader ends and ornamentation go back to the art of the Eastern Church, to Byzantium. The cross unites Christians in West and East. The olive wood comes from Bethlehem; in the town of the manger it has long been carved into devotional items.
