St Valentine was Bishop of Terni and, according to legend, performed Christian weddings. He is patron saint of lovers; his feast day, 14 February, is today's Valentine's Day.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Valentine unites two central symbol-bearers of his tradition: the book and the cockerel. While the book embodies the passing on of teaching and firm rooting in faith, the cockerel traditionally stands for vigilance, renewal and spiritual attentiveness. Its raised position on the book underlines the importance this image has in Christian symbolism. The raised bishop's crozier also points to guidance and pastoral responsibility.
In its calm yet energetic posture the figure invites contemplation and reflection. It is therefore particularly suited to private prayer rooms, chapels and places where spiritual orientation is sought or nurtured. As a gift for religious feasts, too, the motif conveys clarity, mindfulness and a deep connection with the Christian tradition.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Valentine is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena – a time-honoured centre of European woodcarving. The production process begins with the selection of high-quality lime wood, which, thanks to its fine fibre structure, is ideal for the delicate working of facial features, folds of the robe and filigree details such as plumage and the spine of the book. After drying come cutting and the rough carving, in which the basic form emerges. The fine carving then brings out all the characteristic elements precisely, including the detailed depiction of the cockerel, the clearly defined structure of the book, the ornamentally worked mitre and the curved bishop's crozier.
The surface finishing depends on the finish: natural and stained versions emphasise the hand-carved form and the wood grain. Coloured figures are painted by hand in several layers with oil paints, producing soft shading and clear contours. Gold accents are carefully placed and give the motif additional depth.
Every figure is made in South Tyrol and goes through a strict final inspection before it leaves the studio. Depending on the series, it may bear the Val Gardena quality label, which shows regional origin and craft durability. The combination of traditional carving craft, careful surface treatment and the variety of available finishes makes this motif an expressive piece of religious woodwork.
