Motif & meaning
For many people St Thérèse of Lisieux is an emblem of childlike trust, inner devotion and a spirituality rooted in everyday life. Her way of “little steps” describes a faith that expresses itself not in grand gestures but in quiet, penetrating trust. The depiction with cross and roses is among her best-known symbols. The cross stands for her deep bond with Christ, while the roses recall her words that after her death she would send down “a shower of roses” – an image of comfort, grace and spiritual closeness.
The sculpture shows Thérèse in a calm, upright posture. The simple habit underlines the contemplative character of her life, while the delicate roses convey warmth of colour and hope. This combination of simplicity and spiritual depth makes the motif a popular statue for private prayer corners, chapels or rooms where silence and trust play a special role.
For religious celebrations and milestones in life, the statue has a strong symbolic meaning. It is often given for First Holy Communion, Confirmation, religious profession or on feast days. Its motif appeals to people looking for a companion for everyday life, a saint whose message of closeness, confidence and kindness still gives support today. The hand-carved depiction joins this spiritual message with the quality of a traditional wooden statue, which gives any room a calm, devout atmosphere.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Thérèse is made in the traditional South Tyrolean woodcarving that is long-established in Val Gardena. The production process begins with the careful selection of the wood, usually lime wood, as it has a fine, even structure and is especially well suited to richly detailed statues. For larger versions, glued wood blocks are occasionally used to minimise tension in the material and to ensure lasting stability of shape.
After cutting to size, the rough cut begins, in which the basic forms are laid out. In the fine cut the sculpture receives its characteristic features: the gentle facial expression, the calm posture, the flowing habit, the filigree crucifix and the roses. The surface is then sanded and, depending on the finish, primed. The coloured versions are hand-painted in several working steps with high-quality oil colours, which produces fine gradations and soft transitions.
The hand-painted finish underlines the details of the carving. Depending on the series, the statue may carry the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms traditional origin and handcrafted manufacture.
Finally each statue is carefully inspected and sealed for protection. Because wood is a natural material and every sculpture is made entirely by hand, each piece has an individual grain and its own expression. These characteristics make every depiction of St Thérèse a one-of-a-kind piece that joins tradition, craft and spiritual message in a special way.
