This wooden statue of St Elizabeth shows a young woman in a bodice and gathered skirt, a jug in her hand and a sheaf at her feet. It is hand-carved in Val Gardena and makes a name-day gift for an Elizabeth just as well as a figure for the home altar.
The saint meant is usually Elizabeth of Thuringia, daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Landgravine of Thuringia. She is known for her care of the poor and the sick and was canonised by Gregory IX in 1235. In art she is, among other things, shown with a jug. Her feast day is 17 November; she is venerated as patron saint of, among others, widows and orphans, the sick and bakers.
- Heights: 18 cm, 27 cm, 33 cm, 36 cm, 55 cm, 70 cm, 90 cm
- Finishes: natural (finely sanded, untreated wood), multicolour stained (three stain tones with wax) or hand-painted (with oil colours, gold leaf and silver leaf details)
- Wood: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
The name day around 17 November is the obvious occasion. The statue also suits a thank-you to people who care for others in nursing or social work, or a parish with Elizabeth as its patron saint.
As with every statue from the workshop, no two Elizabeths are alike: grain, carving marks and painting make each one a one-of-a-kind piece.
