Motif & meaning
St Cecilia has been venerated as the patron saint of church music since the early centuries. Her depiction joins grace, composure and a deep spiritual orientation. In this statue she holds a small organ – a traditional symbol of her musical work – and at the same time turns to the sheet of music that the little angel at her feet holds out to her. This gesture underlines the handing on and cultivation of sacred music, which is closely linked with her work.
The gentle facial expression, the calm inclination of the head and the harmonious posture convey a quiet inner concentration. The angel holding the sheet of music forms a loving contrast to the saint's calm and hints at the heavenly origin of music. The statue shows Cecilia not in a dramatic but in a delicate, inspiring way – as an emblem of art, devotion and spiritual depth.
In church music, choirs, private devotions or church spaces, the statue has a particularly inspiring effect. It is suitable as a gift for musical anniversaries, church feasts or for people who value Cecilia as a patron saint. The motif emphasises the importance of music as an expression of faith and as a link between people and liturgical tradition.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Cecilia is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, where woodcarving has played a central role for centuries. Each statue begins with the careful selection of the wood – mostly lime wood, as its fine structure makes it especially suitable for detailed work. After cutting to size, the basic form emerges in the rough cut, before the characteristic features are worked out in the fine cut: the soft lines of the face, the flowing folds of the robe, the fine details of the portable organ and the delicate shapes of the little angel.
The finishes show the full range of traditional Val Gardena woodcarving. Stained and multicolour stained versions bring out different tonal values of the wood. Painted statues are built up in several layers of oil colours, which produce warm nuances and fine shading.
The composition of saint, angel and musical instrument demands particular craft sensitivity. The figures must harmonise in gesture and proportion, so that the motif can unfold its unity of grace, music and spiritual orientation. Because each statue is carved and completed individually, every piece shows natural variations in grain, form and nuance. Depending on the series, the statue may carry the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms authentic origin and traditional manufacture.
