Description & details

Catherine of Siena was a mystic and a courageous adviser to popes. She is a Doctor of the Church and patron saint of Europe and of Italy; her feast day is 29 April.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The depiction of St Catherine of Siena is among the quietest and at the same time most profound motifs of sacred art. Her slightly inclined head, the gentle facial expression and the inner calm that the statue radiates reflect her mystical devotion and her intense spiritual experience. As a Doctor of the Church she stands for wisdom, clarity and a deep search for truth – qualities symbolised in the statue by the book in her hand. The white lilies point to purity, devotion and her strong spiritual orientation.

The finely worked Dominican habit underlines her membership of the order and, with its harmonious folds, contributes to the calm presence of the whole statue. The small angel's head on the base complements the motif in a discreet way and recalls the spiritual closeness that is attributed to Catherine in a special measure. This overall composition makes the statue a valued expression of contemplation and spiritual depth.

The statue suits devotional rooms, places of prayer, church institutions and private living spaces where a motif of inner reflection and wisdom is wanted. It is also a fitting gift for religious celebrations such as First Holy Communion, Confirmation, religious jubilees or the saint's patronal feast. Its calm presence invites you to notice moments of silence consciously and to deepen your own faith.

Finish, origin & special features

The statue of St Catherine of Siena is made entirely by traditional hand craftsmanship in Val Gardena, South Tyrol – a region known for its fine, detail-oriented woodcarving. The basis of production is carefully selected, well-seasoned wood, usually lime wood. After cutting to size, the statue is prepared in the rough cut, in which posture, folds of the robe and central symbols such as lilies and the book are laid out. In the fine cut the characteristic facial features, the calm gestures and the fine lines of the Dominican habit emerge. The small angel's head on the base is also worked precisely and in relief.

The hand-painted finish shows the variety of Val Gardena woodcarving. The hand-painted versions are built up in several layers of oil colours, which give the habit depth and the statue a harmonious colour effect.

The symbolic objects in particular – the book and the lilies – require fine craft precision, so that they are firmly integrated and at the same time look clearly legible and cleanly modelled. Each statue is carved, painted and finished individually, so every piece shows slight variations and an individual grain. Depending on the series, the statue may carry the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms origin and traditional manufacture.
