Description & details

This statue of St Elizabeth is modelled on the style of Tilman Riemenschneider. Elizabeth of Hungary (of Thuringia) worked for the poor and the sick and is the patron saint of Caritas; her feast day is 19 November.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

St Elizabeth is one of the best-known figures of Christian mercy. Her life story is marked by love of neighbour, care and a deep sense of justice. The depiction in the Riemenschneider style takes up these values in a particularly quiet, contemplative form: the inclined head and the soft facial expression convey compassion and inner recollection. The bread and jug in her hands stand for direct concern for those in need and for the readiness to put one's own life at the service of others.

In sacred spaces such as churches and chapels, St Elizabeth is often venerated as a model of lived love of neighbour. The graceful late-Gothic interpretation makes the statue not only a religious symbol but also an art-historical reference to an era in which spiritual depth and craft refinement were closely bound together. The calm, finely structured composition of the statue underlines this character and invites viewers to find moments of quiet contemplation.

In a private home, too, the statue has a warm, inspiring effect. It points to human values such as compassion, charity and generosity and is therefore especially suited to people who have a personal connection to these themes or to their namesake saint. Through the combination of floral, iconographic and historically inspired elements, the statue joins religious meaning with aesthetic depth and timeless beauty.

Finish, origin & special features

The statue of St Elizabeth after Riemenschneider is made entirely by traditional hand craftsmanship in Val Gardena, a centre of sacred woodcarving with centuries of history. For the fine working of the face, hands and folds of the robe, lime wood is used by preference. This wood has an even structure and allows the precise modelling of the late-Gothic-inspired details that recall Riemenschneider's expressive formal language. Depending on the series, Swiss stone pine or maple may also be used when a more striking grain or a particular surface effect is wanted.

After the wood is selected comes the cutting to size, followed by the rough cut, in which the basic lines of the statue emerge. In the fine cut the characteristic elements of the Elizabeth statue are carefully worked out: the deeply folded robes, the calm posture of the head, the finely formed face and the filigree depiction of bread and jug. This phase demands a great deal of experience and a sure feeling for proportion and line, since late-Gothic-inspired statues in particular call for a special harmony between expression and the sculpted robe. The surface is then smoothed and prepared for the finish.

The different finishes give the statue different effects. The painted finish, as seen in the pictures, uses traditional colour application in several layers to combine shading, highlights and gold accents harmoniously. The antique genuine gold leaf series also receives a gesso ground, onto which gold leaf is applied; the surface is lightly patinated and looks especially refined.

Finally a strict final inspection checks expression, proportions and surface quality. Depending on the series, the statue may carry the Val Gardena quality label, which confirms genuine origin and traditional manufacture. Because each statue is made of natural wood, the grain varies slightly, and fine differences in shade and structure may occur. These features make every St Elizabeth statue a distinctive one-of-a-kind piece.
