Motif & meaning
In Christian tradition St Raphael the guardian angel stands for protection, guidance and healing companionship. His name means “God heals” and points to his role as support on difficult paths. In tradition Raphael is understood not only as an archangel but also as a personal guardian angel who watches over and guides people.
The depiction shows Raphael leading a child by the hand. This motif is deeply rooted in Christian faith and symbolises the caring closeness of God in everyday life. The angel walks at the child's side without pushing, and with a raised hand points the right way. The child looks up trustingly at its heavenly companion, which expresses security and confidence.
Especially in connection with children, the guardian angel is understood as a symbol of a sheltered upbringing, inner security and divine support. The figure recalls that people are not alone on their path through life but are accompanied and carried. It invites us to develop trust and to entrust ourselves to the protection that goes beyond the visible.
As a devotional figure, St Raphael the guardian angel is suited to private living spaces, children's rooms and personal places of prayer. He is a classic symbol of protection and blessing and is often given on special life occasions. These include in particular christening, birth, First Holy Communion or the start of a new stage of life.
The calm presence and clear symbolism make this depiction timeless and understandable across generations. It combines faith, hope and care in a form that appeals both spiritually and emotionally.
Finish, origin & special features
The wooden figure of the guardian angel St Raphael is made in traditional handwork in Val Gardena, South Tyrol. This region has been known for centuries for its high-quality woodcarving. Every step is carried out with great care and according to handed-down craft techniques that are passed on from generation to generation.
At the start the suitable wood is selected. As a rule lime wood is used, as its fine, even structure makes it particularly well suited to richly detailed carving. Depending on series and size, Swiss stone pine or maple are also used. For larger figures, glued wooden blocks may be used to reduce tension in the material and ensure a lastingly stable form.
The figure group of angel and child is carved entirely by hand. After the rough carving comes the fine carving, in which facial expression, hands, folds of the robe and the wings are worked out precisely. All surfaces are then carefully sanded to achieve a harmonious finish.
Depending on the finish, the figure remains natural or is stained, multicolour stained or painted in colour. Coloured versions are painted by hand and refined with subtle gold accents. The antique genuine gold leaf finish is created with a traditional gesso ground, to which gold leaf is applied and then deliberately patinated. The resulting craquelure gives the figure a historic and particularly valuable look.
Every figure is finally sealed and subjected to a strict final inspection. The Val Gardena quality label may be present depending on the series and stands for verified origin and craft quality from Val Gardena. Because of the handcrafted production and the natural material, every figure is one of a kind, in which grain, colour tone and fine details may vary slightly.
