Motif & meaning

St Gabriel the Archangel takes a central role in Christian tradition as God's messenger. His name means “strength of God” and points to his task of delivering divine messages and announcing turning points in the history of salvation. In sacred art Gabriel is often depicted as a youthful angel with a graceful posture, in order to make purity, closeness and divine clarity visible.

The statue shown here depicts the Archangel in a light stepping movement. The raised hand points upwards and symbolises the divine origin of his message. The lowered gaze and calm bearing convey composure and trust. This depiction invites quiet contemplation and underlines Gabriel's mediating role between heaven and humankind.

The lily branch that the Archangel carries traditionally stands for purity, hope and divine promise. In Christian iconography it is closely linked with the Annunciation and refers to Gabriel's work as the bearer of the good news. In this statue the symbol is used deliberately with restraint and fits harmoniously into the overall composition.

As a devotional statue, St Gabriel the Archangel is especially suited to places of reflection, private home altars, chapels and church spaces. He stands for protection, guidance and trust in divine promises. That also makes the statue a meaningful gift for religious milestones such as a christening, First Holy Communion or Confirmation.

The balanced union of movement and calm, symbolism and craft precision gives this depiction a timeless expressiveness. It appeals to people who understand sacred art not merely as decoration but as an expression of lived tradition and inner conviction.

Finish, origin & special features

The wooden statue of St Gabriel the Archangel is made by traditional hand craftsmanship in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, a region with a centuries-old woodcarving tradition. Every working step is carried out by experienced craftspeople and follows a clearly structured production process that demands the highest precision and care.

It begins with the choice of suitable wood. Mainly lime wood is used, as it is distinguished by its fine structure and its particular suitability for richly detailed carving. Depending on the series and size, Swiss stone pine or maple are also used. For larger formats, glued wood blocks are used to minimise tension in the material and to ensure a lastingly stable form.

The statue is carved entirely by hand. After the rough cut comes the fine cut, in which facial features, folds of the robe and wing structure are worked out precisely. The surface is then carefully sanded. Depending on the chosen finish, a gesso primer follows, especially for the gilded variants.

For the coloured finishes, painting is done by hand with high-quality colours. Gold accents are carried out either as a discreet refinement or as complete gilding. In the antique genuine gold leaf finish, gold leaf is applied to the gesso layer and then deliberately patinated, creating the characteristic craquelé structure that gives the statue a historical look.

Natural and stained variants emphasise the natural grain of the wood and let the craft of the carving stand out especially clearly. Multicolour stained finishes set gentle contrasts without overshadowing the form. Every surface is finally protected and carefully inspected.

Every statue goes through a strict final inspection before it leaves the workshop. The Val Gardena quality label may be present depending on series and finish and stands for verified origin and traditional craftsmanship from Val Gardena. Because of the handcrafted manufacture and the natural material, every statue is one of a kind with individual nuances in colour, grain and detail.
