Motif & meaning
The Archangel Uriel is one of the archangels traditionally associated with light, clarity and divine wisdom. His name is often translated as “Fire of God” or “God is my light” and points to his task of giving orientation and illuminating dark situations. In many depictions Uriel stands symbolically for insight, inner guidance and the strength to make decisions in the light of truth.
The figure shows Uriel with a striking lightning symbol, which looks like a condensed ray of energy. This lightning can be understood as a sign of sudden realisation – a moment in which clarity enters a previously confusing situation in life. The slightly inclined posture of the archangel, the calm facial expression and the flowing folds of the robe combine determination with inner recollection. The wings and the rock-like base emphasise the connection between the heavenly sphere and earthly standpoint: Uriel stands firm and at the same time in relation to the divine.
As a spiritual motif, the Archangel Uriel is particularly suited to people who long for orientation, light and inner clarity. In home altars, prayer rooms or quiet corners of the home, the figure can encourage us to reconsider our own paths and to make decisions consciously. In church spaces Uriel underlines the dimension of enlightenment and spiritual growth.
As a gift, too, the Archangel Uriel carries particular meaning. On occasions such as Confirmation, Communion, (Protestant) Confirmation or personal new beginnings, the figure can be a sign that the path should be walked in the light. The combination of traditional angel symbolism and high-quality handwork makes the Archangel Uriel a lasting reminder of times when clarity and inner stability matter.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of Uriel is made in traditional handwork in Val Gardena, South Tyrol. The basic material is mainly lime wood, as this wood is particularly well suited to richly detailed carving because of its fine structure. Depending on series or figure height, Swiss stone pine or maple may also be used. After careful drying the wood is cut and carved entirely by hand in several steps. First the basic forms emerge, then face, hands, wings, lightning symbol and drapery are refined step by step.
The carvers bring out the features typical of this depiction of the Archangel Uriel: the calm, concentrated facial expression, the dynamic posture, the clearly defined edges of the lightning symbol and the finely structured wings. After the carving, the surface is smoothed and sanded so that the contours stand out clearly and the figure is prepared for the chosen finish.
Depending on the finish, Uriel receives a different surface treatment. Natural figures show only the wood structure and the craft form. Coloured versions are painted by hand with oil paints, which brings out face, robe, wings and lightning symbol in a differentiated way.
Finally, every figure is checked and released only after passing the final inspection. Proportions, surface quality and painting are checked. Depending on the series, the figure may bear a Val Gardena quality label confirming its origin in Val Gardena. Regardless of this, every finish has a one-of-a-kind character: wood grain, colour nuances and small details differ from figure to figure and underline the craft origin. The result is a depiction of the archangel that unites high-quality workmanship, regional woodcarving tradition and a clear symbolic message.
