Motif & meaning
In Christian tradition St Michael is regarded as the leader of the heavenly hosts and as the archangel who defeats evil and restores divine order. The depiction of the battle against the devil is one of his strongest and most symbol-rich motifs. It points to courage, justice and the protection of God, who stands by believers in times of temptation and distress.
The figure shows this moment of victory in a powerful yet dignified composition. The narrative expression arises from the resolute stance of the archangel, the raised cross staff and the defeated devil lying motionless on the ground. The dynamic drapery, the detailed wings and the clear lines emphasise the spiritual authority and inner calm of St Michael.
As a spiritual symbol the archangel stands for protection, strength and divine guidance. He is traditionally invoked as patron against evil and is seen as a companion for people seeking strength and direction. In home altars, prayer rooms or churches the figure recalls the ongoing struggle between good and evil and the confidence that good will prevail in the end.
This motif is also excellent as a gift – whether for religious feasts such as Confirmation or Communion, for special life events or as a grateful gesture of protection and support.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of “St Michael with Devil” is created in careful handwork in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, a region with a centuries-old woodcarving tradition. The starting material is mainly lime wood, whose fine structure allows clear contours and detailed work. For certain series or larger sizes, Swiss stone pine or maple may also be used. After controlled drying the wood is cut and worked entirely by hand.
The carving is done in several stages: first the basic forms are laid out, followed by the characteristic details such as face, armour, wings, drapery and the dynamic depiction of the defeated devil. Every single feather, every movement of the robe and every contour of the cross staff is worked out precisely. After fine sanding the figure receives its surface finishing, depending on the finish.
Natural figures show the pure expression of the wood. Stained or multicolour stained versions emphasise material depth and sculptural quality, while coloured finishes are painted by hand with oil paints and bring out the scene vividly. The genuine gold leaf version is particularly demanding: a gesso ground forms the base, onto which gold leaf is applied in delicate handwork.
Finally, every figure is checked and released only after a strict final inspection. Depending on the series, it may bear a Val Gardena quality label confirming its origin in Val Gardena. Regardless of this, every finish stands for craft precision, artistic interpretation and a culture of production that has grown over generations.
