Joseph gently lays his hand on the young Jesus's shoulder, and the child spreads his arms – an image of companionship and trust between father and child. St Joseph is the patron saint of families, fathers and craftsmen; his feast day is 19 March.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of “St Joseph with the Child Jesus” holds a special place in Christian iconography. Joseph is seen as a silent protector, a model of responsibility, trust and active care. In this carved version he lays his hand gently on the child's shoulder, an image of guidance and security. The Child Jesus opens both arms in a gesture of welcome and blessing that speaks directly to the viewer and invites them to turn inwardly to the motif.
The lily in Joseph's hand points to purity and to his traditional patronage, while the set square symbolises his craft background. These two elements join spiritual meaning with everyday life and make the motif accessible to families, craftsmen and believers alike. The halo of rays around the child stresses the sacred dimension and creates a clear focal point within the composition.
In prayer rooms, chapels or private living areas in particular, this depiction unfolds its calm, comforting effect. It is suitable as a symbol-rich gift for religious feasts such as christening, Communion, Confirmation or the blessing of a home. For collectors of traditional woodwork, too, the motif is highly valued, as it brings together family closeness, spiritual depth and cultural roots in harmony.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of “St Joseph with the Child Jesus” is created in a traditional, multi-stage working process, as it has been kept alive in Val Gardena for generations. After the careful selection of the wood – mostly lime wood for fine detail, occasionally Swiss stone pine or maple depending on size – comes controlled drying to minimise tension. The blank is then cut and carved entirely by hand. The rough carving lays out the form, while the fine carving works out characteristic features such as facial features, drapery and symbols.
Depending on the finish, the surface is processed differently. On natural figures the finely sanded wood structure remains visible. Stained versions emphasise the grain and warm wood tones, while multicolour stained finishes take on a slightly differentiated three-tone appearance. In the coloured finish the figure is painted with oil paints that strengthen shading, depth and expression. The genuine gold leaf finish is created by a traditional ground (gesso) onto which gold leaf is applied.
All production takes place 100% in Val Gardena/South Tyrol and is subject to a strict final inspection. Every figure may – depending on the series – bear the Val Gardena quality label. As the wood grain varies naturally, every piece has an authentic one-of-a-kind character. The combination of craft precision, regional tradition and versatile surfaces makes this motif a special work of art for collectors, believers and everyone who values durable, expressive woodwork.
