Description & details

St Joseph the Worker shows the carpenter from Nazareth with his tools. On 1 May the Church celebrates him as patron saint of workers and craftsmen – a sign of the dignity of honest work.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The depiction of St Joseph the Worker emphasises his role as a simple, faithful father of the family and as patron saint of craftsmen. In an upright yet calm posture he carries a tool and a wooden board – clear references to his traditional trade as a carpenter. His measured gestures and gentle expression show the reliability and care that make Joseph one of the most important role models in the Christian tradition. The plain clothing and natural drape of the folds underline his down-to-earth nature and closeness to everyday life.

For home altars, workrooms and family areas the figure has strong symbolic power: it stands for protection, stability, diligence and blessed guidance. People who work in the trades in particular find in this depiction an inspiring link to their working day. At special milestones such as building a house, starting a career or family decisions, the figure also gives a sense of companionship and orientation.

Finish, origin & special features

The figure of St Joseph the Worker is made entirely in traditional hand carving in Val Gardena, South Tyrol. The lime wood used is carefully selected and gently dried before cutting. In the rough carving the basic proportions of body, robe and tool emerge. The fine carving then models the characteristic details: the calm facial expression, the soft transitions of the robe, the realistic movement of the folds and the clearly defined way the tool is held. Every cut is made by hand and gives the figure its individual note.

After carving, the surface is sanded smooth and then stained in several colours. The multicolour stained version produces warm, harmonious tones and emphasises the depth of the drapery.

Before dispatch every figure goes through a strict final inspection. Depending on the series it may bear a Val Gardena quality seal confirming its origin in Val Gardena. The combination of high-quality wood, precise handwork and careful surface treatment makes every figure an individual one-of-a-kind piece that suits family rooms, workshops and private prayer areas alike as a valuable and symbolically strong depiction.
