Isidore of Madrid was a simple farmer who joined work and prayer. The sheaf of grain recalls his occupation; he is the patron saint of farmers; his feast day is 15 May.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Isidore joins faith, closeness to the soil and farming tradition in an impressive way. As patron saint of farmers, he stands for diligence, perseverance and trust in divine assistance in the daily work in field and farmyard. The farming tool in his hand and the bundle of ears of grain at his feet point directly to the fruits of human labour and gratitude for a successful harvest. His calm yet determined gaze conveys confidence and strengthens hope for protection of home, family and farm.
In rural regions and farm chapels, the veneration of St Isidore still plays an important role today. The statue is suited to devotional rooms, home altars or as a lasting companion on farms. At harvest thanksgiving, farm blessings or anniversaries in the farming world, it acts as a powerful symbol of blessing, gratitude and trust in a good future.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Isidore is made in genuine traditional hand carving in Val Gardena, South Tyrol. The lime wood used is carefully selected and dried over a longer period before it is worked in the workshop. First comes the cutting to size, followed by the rough cut, in which the basic proportions and movements are set. The fine cut brings out the characteristic features: the farmer's clothing with deeply folded drapery, the striking facial features and the finely worked bundle of ears of grain on the ground.
After the carving process, the surface is smoothed and then multicolour stained. The multicolour stained finish gives the clothing harmonious, warm tones and emphasises the sculptural form.
Before leaving the workshop, each statue goes through a strict final inspection. Depending on the series, the depiction may carry a Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms its origin from Val Gardena. The combination of precise carving, natural wood grain and careful finishing makes every statue a distinctive one-of-a-kind piece, ideal for farm chapels, farming families, collectors and rural prayer rooms.
